Keeping up with Black Stax

Embodying the ideals of alternative hip hop and reminiscent of black radio, these are the  ”children of Nirvana,” this year they embark on a new journey drenched in creativity and artistic expression.

They’ve appeared in the pages of The Stranger Newspaper, Seattle Weekly Newspaper and The Hype Magazine; online features include publicola.net and hiphoppress.com.

Comprised of Seattle accomplished MCs Silas Blak and Jace ECAj, and celebrated vocalist Felicia Loud.  Their music is inspiring, relevant and controversial; every word carefully chosen and every song carries a message of societal challenges, common justice and community uplift.

Their first album “Talking Buildings” (2010) was released with their first single “I Love My Life”.  The music video celebrates life, gives appreciation to heritage and demonstrates the positive, organic vibe of Black Stax.  Well received upon its debut, the music video played in Foot Locker and Foot Action stores nationwide.

Find out more about their audience as noted in an interview below.

I think it’s a collaborative audience. It’s an audience that comes from Felicia Loud’s soul, jazz, theater crowd. From Silent Lamb’s hip hop, revolutionary, conscious crowd. From Owour’s live music, artist crowd. It’s a blend of those elements and an inclusion of people looking for music that touches more than the surface. People not necessarily looking for a genre but GOOD Music. Those looking for the SOUL!

~ Seattle Fashion Network (Cover photo credit)

“what defines Loud is…is her flawless command of the tones and textures of American Soul…what defines [the MCs] is their commitment to a hip hop that is complicated at the levels of ideas and expression, politics and language.” - The Stranger

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Urban Star Spoken Word and Supa E Productions Presents:

TONY AWARD winning Poet “Black Ice,” September 29th, 2012 at the Scarlett Tree located at 801 NE 65th St Suite C Seattle, WA 98115

image

Introducing Lamar Manson, known throughout the spoken word community as Black Ice. Black Ice is a prolific artist, whose stage performances bridge the gap between hip-hop and poetry.  Hip-hop poet Black Ice began spreading his words of revolution back in 1993

Once Russell Simmons caught his act, the poet’s quest for nationwide recognition kicked into overdrive. Black Ice went on to appear on five consecutive seasons of the Simmons-produced Def Poetry Jam on HBO, which led to a starring role in the Tony Award-winning “Def Poetry Jam on Broadway.”

Black Ice is also the exclusive  voice over artist for the audio versions of the Russell Simmons books “Do You: 12 Laws to Access the Power in You to Achieve Happiness and Success” and the 2011 release “Super Rich: A Guide to Having It All”.

It was 2004 when he made his breakthrough into hip-hop, appearing on Method Man’s Tical 0: The Prequel and Pete Rock’s Soul Survivor II.

In 2006, he would team with producer Eric “Booty” Greene and release his debut album, The Death of Willie Lynch, on the Koch label. That same summer, he opened for R&B superstar Mary J. Blige on her world tour.

During the 2011 – 2012 academic year, the Aaron Brooks Foundation and Drills and Skills partnered to fund three after school programs in King County schools. Our goal for the 2012 – 2013 academic year is to triple our number of programs. Drills and Skills programs have serviced King County youth for more then 19 years. These programs provide services for middle and high school students which enable them to achieve their personal, educational and professional goals through activities that engage them both mentally and physically. This is accomplished by leveraging school resources, partnering with community based organizations, and engaging volunteers in our services. With cuts in public schools funding, we need your support to continue our after school programs.

The Drills and Skills Charitibowl Classic is an opportunity to showcase our exceptional youth and raise needed funds for our continued growth. The event also features the annual presentation of the John W. Hampton Award. This award is given to a local community leader/coach who exemplifies service to the youth of our community. The event also features a silent auction, regional bowling tournament, and celebrity bowling tournament.

You have the power to increase the untapped potential of our children and teens. With your help we are looking forward to providing resources and opportunities to those in need in King County and enabling them to pursue their goals.

Thank you for your consideration and support of our work in helping to create opportunities for youth and teens.

Drills and Skills and Aaron Brooks Foundation major influence and supporter had a few things to say about his annual Charity Basketball Game!

 The Spokesman-Review

“I think it means everything to the kids,” Crawford said. “It’s an honor to participate in this. I think all the players, they see exactly how important this is.”

Crawford said he had no trouble selling the event to his NBA colleagues, a job made easier with instant messaging. It also offered a chance to forget about the NBA free-agent rumors, including his situation as at least five teams vie for his services next season.

The free-agent guard made a 40-footer as the third-quarter buzzer sounded.

“We’ve had a great time in Spokane,” Crawford said. “We’ve been doing all the Hoopfest things. This is such a great town.”
