Keeping up with Black Stax
Embodying the ideals of alternative hip hop and reminiscent of black radio, these are the ”children of Nirvana,” this year they embark on a new journey drenched in creativity and artistic expression.
They’ve appeared in the pages of The Stranger Newspaper, Seattle Weekly Newspaper and The Hype Magazine; online features include publicola.net and hiphoppress.com.
Comprised of Seattle accomplished MCs Silas Blak and Jace ECAj, and celebrated vocalist Felicia Loud. Their music is inspiring, relevant and controversial; every word carefully chosen and every song carries a message of societal challenges, common justice and community uplift.
Their first album “Talking Buildings” (2010) was released with their first single “I Love My Life”. The music video celebrates life, gives appreciation to heritage and demonstrates the positive, organic vibe of Black Stax. Well received upon its debut, the music video played in Foot Locker and Foot Action stores nationwide.
Find out more about their audience as noted in an interview below.
I think it’s a collaborative audience. It’s an audience that comes from Felicia Loud’s soul, jazz, theater crowd. From Silent Lamb’s hip hop, revolutionary, conscious crowd. From Owour’s live music, artist crowd. It’s a blend of those elements and an inclusion of people looking for music that touches more than the surface. People not necessarily looking for a genre but GOOD Music. Those looking for the SOUL!
~ Seattle Fashion Network (Cover photo credit)
“what defines Loud is…is her flawless command of the tones and textures of American Soul…what defines [the MCs] is their commitment to a hip hop that is complicated at the levels of ideas and expression, politics and language.” - The Stranger

R. Kelly’s Trapped in the Closet: The Next Installment is coming to IFC this fall
R. Kelly’s sprawling hip hopera Trapped in the Closet is coming back to IFC and we couldn’t be more excited. The Trapped in the Closet saga began life as a five-part song on R. Kelly’s 2005 album “TP3. Reloaded” and soon spread to the world through a series of musically-driven endearingly odd and downright entertaining chapters. While there have already been 22 chapters of the seemingly never-ending saga, when it comes to R. Kelly and his quirky cast of characters, too much is never enough.
The premiere chapters were a suspenseful, mysterious, humorous and dramatic story, packed with cliffhangers and unexpected twists and turns. Now, Sylvester (played by R. Kelly), Rufus, Cathy, Gwendolyn, Bridget, Big Man, Rosie the Nosy Neighbor, Twan and Pimp Lucius are back! This year, the crew reunites on IFC in the next installments of R. Kelly’s continuing saga about a group of characters interconnected by sexual exploits, little people and a mysterious package. As we said, it’s a story that has already spanned 22 chapters, and we’ll confess it can be a little bit confusing at times, this just adds to its mystique and wonder. But, if you’re a stickler for storyline, don’t worry, when the show returns to IFC, R. Kelly will have plenty of opportunities to untangle the narrative — or complicate it even more.
Trapped in the Closet: The Next Installment hits IFC’s air this fall.

Rollingstone Cover artist Rick Ross talks more info about his decision to become a Correctional Officer…
“This was my best friend, who I ate peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches with, and pork and beans with, my buddy, my partner, my number-one dude. Suddenly I’m talking to him over federal phone calls. Hearing the way it was building, I knew I couldn’t take nothing for granted,” says Ross. “My homey’s father was a huge influence on my life, too … He was the one who was like, ‘Yo, go get a job somewhere, man. Go be a fireman. Or go be a fucking corrections officer. Just go sit down somewhere.”
He also spoke on the cause of hispair of seizureslast year, blaming his habit of smoking too much marijuana as the stimulus for his medical affliction. “I’m most definitely an avid user, a pothead, however you want to look at it. I call it green caviar. It’s like a short vacation – it helps me chill out. And people really love it when I chill out, because I can really be a dickhead.”
